BOOK REDESIGN
TOOLS USED:
Indesign, Illustrator
Redesigning a book cover was another college assignment, and for redesigning I chose Romeo and Juliet, one of my favorite books. For this design, I focused on symmetry and typography to reflect the story’s themes. The first letters of the characters’ names “reach” toward each other, symbolizing the connection between Romeo and Juliet.

I started by designing the cover and back in Illustrator, using a grid I first mapped out in InDesign. Getting the structure right was super important as the redesign had to be just like a real editorial piece.

One of my favorite parts of this project was digging through archives to find original illustrations from one of the earliest editions of Romeo and Juliet. It felt like a hidden treasure, and incorporating them into the design added so much character and authenticity to the final look.

From there, most of the work happened in InDesign. I focused on refining the structure, making sure the text, images, and layout all worked together great. It was a lot of tweaking and adjusting, but I wanted everything to feel balanced and wisely placed.

Finally, I printed the book, I was really nervous and excited at the same time. I spent a lot of time setting up the proper printing settings to make sure everything came out just right. Holding the finished piece in my hands was truly satisfying.
